Foreigners' Old Age Pension Payment of 26.7 Billion in the First Half of the Year alone...a majority of Chinese

The number of foreigners receiving old-age pensions exceeded 10,000, and 53.5% of them were Chinese.

Kim Mi-ae, a lawmaker of the People's Power, analyzed the data of the National Pension Service on the 21st and found that 10,410 foreigners were receiving old-age pensions as of the end of June this year, and the amount paid to them in the first half was 26.78 billion won.

The old-age pension is a general form of national pension received when the subscription period exceeds 10 years (120 months) and reaches the age of receipt.

By nationality, there were 5,571 Chinese, 53.5% of the total, and the amount received was 10.107 billion won. In other words, each Chinese received 1.81 million won.

There were 2,276 Americans (21.9%) and the amount received was 8.179 billion won (3.59 million won per person). 867 Canadians (8.3%) received 3.43 billion won (3.96 million won per person), 585 Taiwanese (5.6%) received 1.89 billion won (3.24 million won per person), and 426 Japanese (4.1%) received 1.147 billion won (2.69 million won per person).

When old-age pensioners die, the number of foreigners receiving survivors' pensions paid to their spouses exceeded 4,000, reaching 4,020 in the first half of this year, and the amount paid to them was 8,112 million won.

Chinese people also received the most bereaved pension. They received a total of 2.874 billion won in bereaved family pensions with 1,701 people (42.3%) receiving about 1.69 million won per person.

As for Vietnamese, 473 people (11.8%) received 1.016 billion won (2.15 million won per person). 434 Americans (10.8 percent) received 1.236 billion won (2.85 million won per person), 359 Japanese (8.9 percent) received 725 million won (2.02 million won per person), and 220 Filipinos (5.5 percent) received 448 million won (2.04 million won per person).

The number of foreign national pension subscribers has continued to rise to a total of 455,839 as of June this year, up more than 40 percent in five years compared to 321,948 in 2019.

Among the subscribers, Chinese are the largest with 194,421 (42.6%), but Vietnamese and Cambodians, who have recently been designated as target countries for businesses, have also increased by more than 10% in half a year.
