The remains of children offered as sacrifices during ancient social religious ceremonies were found in large numbers.

The Associated Press reported that Peruvian archaeologists unearthed 43 remains of children believed to have been sacrificed by the pre-Inca civilization Chimu about 600 years ago on the 4th local time.

Along with the remains of the children, the remains of two adults and a llama were also found.

Most of the remains show signs of deep wounds to the chest or ribs, archaeological researchers said.

The researchers explained that at the time, the Chimu used to offer children as sacrifices to God during religious ceremonies.Archaeologists discovered the remains of 140 children and 200 llamas buried near the same excavation site in Trujillo,
in 2018.

The Chimu lived in Peru's northern coastal region and were conquered by the Incas, although they once built their most powerful culture, the AP explained.
