Syria's interim government "suspends constitutional and parliamentary activities for three months"

The rebel-led transitional government, which ousted Syria's al-Assad regime, has decided to suspend its constitution and parliamentary activities for the next three months, AFP reported.

A spokesman for the transitional government said the upcoming Judicial and Human Rights Commission will review the constitution and propose an amendment.

The current constitution enacted in 2012 does not specify Islam as a state religion.

Islamic militant group Hayat Tahrit al-Sham, HTS-led rebels seized control of the capital Damascus on the 8th, and dictator al-Assad quickly defected to Russia.

Muhammad al-Bashir, the leader of the opposition, will be appointed as prime minister of the transitional government and will remain active until March 1 next year.

In the three-month transfer of power, a spokesman for the transitional government said the priority was to preserve government agencies, stressing that they respected the diversity of Syria's religion and culture and that this would not change, AFP said.

The spokesman also added that those who commit crimes against the Syrian people will be brought to justice.

Syria is dominated by Sunni Muslims, but Assad, a Shiite branch of the Alawite Muslim faction, has suppressed Sunni, claiming to be the protector of minorities.
