With the recent development of the 21st typhoon 'Kongrey', there are concerns that the typhoon may move northward in November, which is unusual near the Korean Peninsula this fall.

In the past 73 years, Korea has never been hit by a typhoon in November.

Where will this typhoon be headed?

Reporter Jung Hye-yoon analyzed it.

This is 'Kongrey', the 21st typhoon that is growing its power in the waters east of Manila, the Philippines.

Sea temperatures around here are still high near 30 degrees, and typhoons are expected to develop further for the time being,

Also later this week, the typhoon's central wind speed is expected to rise to 180 km/h, to a level "very strong" enough to derail a running train.

In particular, attention has been drawn to the unusual path of the typhoon as the possibility of 'Kongrey' moving northward to the Korean Peninsula and near Japan has recently been raised.

However, according to the newly announced forecast by the Korea Meteorological Administration, Typhoon Kong-rey is unlikely to be recorded as an unusual November typhoon, moving northward to the Korean Peninsula.

The Korea Meteorological Administration says that although typhoons develop strongly, they weaken after passing through Taiwan surrounded by high mountain ranges.
Southward is expected to turn into a tropical depression off the southern coast of China, blocked by cold air.

It is difficult for typhoons to have a direct impact on the Korean Peninsula.

In fact, in the past 73 years since 1951, when statistical data began to be calculated, there has not been a single typhoon directly affecting or landing on the Korean Peninsula in November.

[Lee Sang-jin / Forecaster of the Korea Meteorological Administration] Statistically, there were no cases where typhoons affected the Korean Peninsula in November. The 21st typhoon 'Kong Lei' is likely to develop strongly, but its intensity will weaken rapidly as it passes through Taiwan on November 1, and will then further weaken as it encounters cold air from the north as it moves north along China's southern coast.]

Experts stress the need for continuous vigilance and preparation as typhoons are moving northward due to heat waves and heavy rains this fall, although they have avoided typhoons for the first time ever in November.

[Ban Ki-sung / YTN Disaster Advisory Committee, K-Climit Representative: Usually, cold air flows south over Korea during this period, so typhoons do not move north to near the Korean Peninsula. The autumn weather is so unusual this year, so it will be important to continue to examine and prepare for the damage caused by heavy rain caused by rain clouds even if the typhoon weakens.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) urged continued preparation and caution later this week, saying that the remaining rain clouds will strengthen the rain and wind around Jeju Island and the southern coast, and that there will be high waves of up to 4m at sea.
