The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education said it has selected 32 new International Baccalaureate (IB) candidate schools that develop creative and critical capabilities through classes designed to focus on inquiry, execution, and reflection.

The newly selected schools are 14 elementary schools, 12 middle schools, and 6 high schools.

With the addition to these schools, the number of IB candidate schools in the province has expanded from 19 to 51.

IB is an international certified school education program developed and operated by the non-profit education foundation IBO based in Switzerland, and is an educational system that pursues self-directed growth of learners.

The IB school stage consists of schools of interest, candidate schools, and certified schools (world schools).

Interest schools are like pilot schools where school members understand and share IB philosophy and educational goals and strive to implement operational tasks, and candidate schools receive consultants for each school from the IB headquarters and test-run IB through continuous consulting to prepare for approval of certified schools.

Certification schools are schools certified by the IB headquarters and are re-certified every five years.
