The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education countered, "Some claims that 'the list of harmful sex education books for teenagers was made to be discarded by school libraries at all levels' are not true."

It was controversial after it was alleged that the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education included Han Kang's novel "The Vegetarian," which received the Nobel Prize for Literature earlier, on the list.

According to the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education, conservative parent groups continued to file complaints last year, pointing to books they claimed were harmful to students, saying they were kept in some school libraries.

In response, the Office of Education delivered an official document containing the criteria for deliberating harmful media for teenagers to the Office of Education from September to November of the same year, and schools at all levels held a library operation committee involving parents and others to decide on harmful books.

However, reports containing claims from conservative parent organizations were attached to the official document, and some schools reportedly referred to them when deciding on harmful books.

As a result, about 2,490 schools judged a total of 2,517 books as harmful education books for youth and discarded them.

That means you've discarded one book per school.

This is 5.7% of the 44,903 books of sex education that are controversial for harmfulness.

In particular, it has been confirmed that only one school has discarded the novel The Vegetarian.

The school reportedly judged that some of the vegetarian content related to sex could have a bad effect on students.

An official from the Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education said, "The sex education books that were discarded last year were decided autonomously by each school holding a steering committee," adding, "We did not force specific books."
