The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education said it will invest about 20 billion won by 2026 to install sprinklers in all school dormitories and special schools.
According to the provincial education office, sprinklers in school buildings are effective in initial extinguishing in the event of a fire, but some dormitories and special schools are currently excluded from sprinkler installation because the Fire Facility Act does not require installation if the number of floors or floor area is less than a certain size.
The provincial education office also plans to install sprinklers in 474 schools with Pilotti parking lot structures that are difficult to extinguish in the early stages of the fire.
It will also replace ceiling materials in some schools with plastic panels that are prone to fire.
By 2028, 52.6 billion won will be invested in installing sprinklers and replacing combustible ceiling materials in schools with Pilotti parking lot structures.
Lim Tae-hee, superintendent of Gyeonggi-do, visited Gimpo Unyu High School and said, "The school is the safest place for students," adding, "We will have a school fire safety system without blind spots so that we can extinguish the fire anytime and anywhere."
