Italian Prime Minister Jorja Meloni has convened a G7 video summit to discuss the Middle East crisis caused by Iran's airstrike on Israel.

"Italy, as the chair of the G7, will strive for a diplomatic solution to the Middle East crisis," Meloni said on the 2nd local time, calling for a summit.

"The goal of this meeting is to stabilize the Israeli-Lebanon border through the full implementation of Resolution 1701," Meloni stressed.

U.N. Security Council Resolution 1701 was adopted in 2006 to end the Israeli-Lebanon war, and the Israeli military will completely withdraw from Lebanon and only Lebanese troops and U.N. peacekeepers will be stationed south of Lebanon's Ritani River, except Hezbollah.

"Italy has urged the UN Security Council to consider strengthening the UN peacekeeping mission to ensure the security of the Israeli-Lebanon border," Meloni said.

Italy is the chair of this year's G7 summit and a major U.N. peacekeeping contingent.

Local media reported that the Italian government was considering withdrawing troops as fighting intensified recently on the Israeli-Lebanon border, which Italy's foreign ministry denied.
