The official election campaign for the October 16 by-elections, which selects four heads of local governments and the superintendent of education of Seoul, has begun.

The leaders of the ruling and opposition parties saw the election as a prelude to the local elections next year and launched a full-fledged support campaign.

Reporter Kang Min-kyung reports.

People's Power has nominated three out of four heads of local governments in this by-elections.

In particular, Ganghwa, Incheon, and Geumjeong, Busan, are considered the dominant regions.

This is why floor leader Choo Kyung-ho helped at the opening ceremony of the Ganghwa County candidate from the first day of the election campaign.

[Choo Kyung-ho / People's Power Floor Leader: We are holding a military election to strengthen and develop. To do that, first, you need to be a person who is good at work and knows the region well inside out.

CEO Han Dong-hoon posted a message on social media to support him.

They listed the candidates' names one by one and appealed for a "real worker" for the region.Representative

Han plans to hold on-site supreme council meetings in Busan and Incheon starting next week to support the candidates in earnest.

If the two dominant districts succeed in Mercury, it seems that the calculation is based on the calculation that they will be able to restore their narrowed position and boost their leadership due to the recent controversy over "banchan passing."

The Democratic Party of Korea is actively moving, considering the recent drop in approval ratings of the party and the government as an opportunity, not only "Honam Mercury" but also "recapturing Busan."

Representative Lee Jae-myung ran to Geumjeong, Busan, following Honam, from the first day of the campaign and shouted "regime judgment theory."

[Lee Jae Myung / Minjoo Party leader: If this general election was the first one, this by-election should be the second one, do you agree?]

However, the relationship with the Cho Kuk Innovation Party remains the Democratic Party's biggest homework.

This is because the Cho Kuk Innovation Party, which has nominated two candidates in Honam and Geumjeong, Busan, has not yet expressed an atmosphere to join hands with the Democratic Party.

In particular, representative Cho Kuk is moving his position to Yeonggwang and Gokseong in Jeollanam-do, and is eager to fight for Honam against the Democratic Party.

[Representative of Cho Kuk / Cho Kuk Innovation Party: Military government that goes with inertia, should stop now. There needs to be a change.]

It is a mini-election to select one superintendent and four heads of local governments, but each party's goal of recapturing Mercury and highlighting the presence of a third party is clear.

The battle between the ruling and opposition parties to take the lead in political affairs is expected to heat up during the rest of the campaign.
