Iran's former president has claimed that the head of Iran's secret forces to hunt down Israeli spies was a spy who provided information to Israel.

Former Iranian President Ahmadinejad is said to have made the remarks in an interview with CNN Turk, a Turkiye subsidiary of CNN's U.S. broadcaster.

Ahmadinejad said in an interview that the head of a secret intelligence unit that was monitoring the activities of Mossad agents, the Israeli intelligence agency operating in Iran, was identified as an Israeli spy.

It also claimed that 20 members of the unit were double agents and that they handed over sensitive information about Iran's nuclear program to Israel.

In particular, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu reportedly siphoned off documents related to Iran's nuclear weapons program released in April 2018.

Then-Prime Minister Netanyahu claimed Iran continued to develop nuclear weapons after the 2015 nuclear agreement with six major countries, including the United States, based on Iran's internal documents, and then-U.S. President Trump unilaterally declared his withdrawal from the agreement in May 2018.

Former President Ahmadinejad said the head of the secretive unit was found to be an Israeli spy in 2021, but that he and other double agents had all escaped from Iran and are now living in Israel.

Former President Ahmadinejad is a hardline politician from Iran's Revolutionary Guard who won re-election in the 2005 presidential election and served as president for eight years.
