[29th Buccanement] How did the cursed masterpiece 'Protect the Earth' get to Hollywood?
Ko Kyung-beom, director of CJ ENM's film business division, revealed how the movie "Protect the Earth" was made into a Hollywood remake.


The CJ Movie Forum was held at CGV Centum City in Haeundae-gu, Busan, where the 29th Busan International Film Festival will be held today (4th). The movie forum "Global Talk" was attended by CJ ENM's director of film business Ko Kyung-beom, director Han Joon-hee, director Jeon Go-woon, and director Yoo Jae-sun.

In particular, the forum drew attention as the process of remaking "Protect the Earth" into a Hollywood remake was revealed.

"Protect the Earth!" released in 2003, is a black comedy about the story of Byeong-gyu (played by Shin Ha-kyun), the main character who believes that a disaster will occur on Earth because of aliens, kidnapping and torturing Kang Man-sik (played by Baek Yoon-sik), the president of Yuje Chemical, as an alien.

The movie, which failed to hit the box office with only 73,132 audiences when it was released in the theater, was recognized for its cinematic quality by sweeping leading domestic and international film festivals and earning the term "cursed masterpiece." In addition, 21 years after its domestic release, the news that Hollywood director Yorgos Lanthimos will take the megaphone and Emma Stone will star in a new remake drew attention again.

On this day, Koh revealed the process of "Protect the Earth" being remade into Hollywood.

CJ ENM was preparing a remake of 'Protect the Earth' even before the movie 'Parasite'. Recalling the time, he said, "It was a challenge for strangers on the periphery to make Hollywood movies, but I had faith in the concept of the movie because it was ahead of my time."

CJ ENM then identified fandom supporting the film throughout Hollywood, and explained the initial process of the plan, saying that a theater in LA saw director Ari Ester, famous for "The Oilfield," "Midsomma" and "Boyz Applade," working as a modulator to introduce "Protect the Earth." Director
