"It's not as good as a convenience store lunch box"."Loud" for a 3,000 won firefighter's meal.

Some fire officials point out that the unit price of a meal is around 3,000 won, which is not even close to the level of lunch boxes at convenience stores.

According to data received by the office of Han Byeong-do, a member of the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee, from the National Fire Agency on the 4th, Daegu A Fire Station had the lowest price of meals among fire stations nationwide at 3,112 won. It was followed by 3,852 won for B Fire Station in Gyeongnam and 3,920 won for C Fire Station in Jeollabuk-do.

In addition, the unit price of a meal at Jeollanam-do D Fire Station, Gangwon E Fire Station, Ulsan F Fire Station, and Seoul G Fire Station was confirmed to be around 4,000 won.

This is the result of a sample survey of the cost of meals at one of the 241 fire departments nationwide by the National Fire Agency. It does not reach the convenience store lunch box, which is usually around 4,000 won, and is far lower than the free school meal price (5,398 won) for public high schools in Seoul or the school meal price for children who are concerned about skipping meals (9,000 won) in Seoul.

The unit price of meals varied by more than twice as much for each fire station. The highest price for school meals was 6,887 won at Incheon D Fire Station.

The reason why the unit price of meals varies widely by region is that each city and province has different grounds for supporting the school meal budget for firefighters. The fixed meal cost (140,000 won) for civil servants is based on 20 meals a month (two meals a day) for general administrative officials, but for current civil servants (three shifts), the unit price of one meal drops significantly as it is based on 30 meals a month (three meals a day).

There were some places where nutritionists were not deployed at all. There was no nutritionist at the fire station in Jeollanam-do, and there was only one nutritionist at the fire station in Jeollabuk-do, Gyeongbuk, and Jeju.

"A firefighter's meal is a 'power to save the people', and now it is time to end poor meals that hinder the firepower," a lawmaker said. "The National Fire Agency needs to consider promoting the unification of the school meal system by conducting a full survey of the school meal system by city and province and enacting ordinances, starting with discussions with the Ministry of Personnel Management and Innovation on raising the fixed-rate meal cost for field workers."
