Ahn Kyu-baek of the Democratic Party of Korea, a member of the National Assembly's National Defense Committee, urged the system to be improved, saying it is unfair for a person sentenced to prison for violating the Military Service Act to be exempted from military service.

Rep. Ahn Kyu-baek said, "Those who have been sentenced to prison or imprisonment for more than six months will be sentenced to supplementary service, and those who have been sentenced to imprisonment for more than a year and a half will be disposed of as wartime workers who are convened only during war."

Lawmaker Ahn said that more than 80 people are exempted from military service every year after being sentenced to prison for violating the military service law, and that giving military exemptions to those who violate the military service law because they do not want to join the military undermines the fairness of military service obligations.

After ordering related measures, he added that he is preparing a revision to the Military Service Act for fair military service obligations for everyone.
