Over the past 56 years, the temperature in Korea's waters has risen by 1.44 degrees, while the temperature in the East Sea has risen by 1.9 degrees.

According to the "2024 Fisheries Climate Change Impact" report by the National Fisheries Research and Development Institute, the surface water temperature in Korea's waters rose by 1.44 degrees while the global surface water temperature rose by 0.7 degrees from 1968 to 2023.

The increase in surface water temperature was 1.9 degrees in the East Sea, followed by 1.27 degrees in the West Sea and 1.15 degrees in the South Sea.

The National Fisheries Research and Development Institute analyzed that in the East Sea, the water temperature rose rapidly as the boundary between cold water and warm water moved northward due to warming.

Due to this change in water temperature, pollock seeds have dried up in the East Sea, and fishing has been banned since 2019, and squid catch, which was an annual average of 200,000 tons, has decreased to a record low of 23,000 tons last year.

The Fisheries Research and Development Institute predicts that our sea water temperature will rise by 1 to 4 degrees depending on the scenario by 2100.
