The government will begin piloting the "Battery Certification System" as a safety measure against electric vehicle fires.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport signed a business agreement with Hyundai Motor, Kia, and LG Energy Solution today (15th) for a pilot project of the battery safety certification system.

The battery safety certification system is a pre-certification system in which the government directly tests and guarantees battery safety, such as thermal shock and overheating, instead of a self-certification system in which automakers verify their safety on their own.

As a result, manufacturers of finished vehicles and batteries must obtain certification from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport before selling the batteries on the market, and they can be ordered to correct them if they are nonconforming in the conformity test.

The battery safety certification system, which will take effect in February next year, will be mandatory for all electric vehicle batteries from February 2026 after a one-year grace period.
