In Hong Kong, a group of people who stole tens of billions of won from men using deepfake technology were arrested.

According to reports by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) and CNN on the 14th, 27 Hong Kong criminal gang members were arrested by the police for stealing $360 million in Hong Kong dollars and about 63.194 billion won in Korean money by deceiving victims after replacing a scammer's face with a fake woman's face with deepfake technology.

The organization made contact with victims through social media and used pictures of a beauty made from deepfakes to gain favor. By creating a perfect virtual woman in many ways, including personality, education, and occupation, he built trust by talking to victims, and after developing into a relationship, he talked about marriage and induced investment in a fake cryptocurrency trading platform.

In the process, the fraudulent organization reassured the victims by showing them the records of manipulated profit transactions. The victims only believed in women and poured money into them, but when they failed to withdraw the money afterwards, they realized that they were deceived.

The scam organization has been active since October last year, earning about 100,000 Hong Kong dollars per person per month and about 17.5 million won in Korean money. The arrested members were young people between the ages of 21 and 34, most of whom were highly educated.

Local police added that they appear to have worked with overseas IT experts to build a fake cryptocurrency platform and receive investment from victims.

The victims were diverse, including those from Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan, India and Singapore.

CNN reported that the development of deepfake technology has increased the likelihood of potential victims being deceived, and Hong Kong authorities are on high alert.
