Last November, a taxi driver in his 60s drove through downtown Seoul. There was an incident that hit a wall in a residential area.

At that time, the taxi driver insisted on sudden acceleration, saying that he applied the brake but it did not work.

However, the video of the black box installed on the pedal revealed that only the accelerator pedal was removed and pressed six times.

The National Forensic Service analyzed the "accident of sudden acceleration" over the past five years and confirmed that the driver stepped on the wrong accelerator pedal and caused the accident, except for cases where the vehicle was completely damaged.

In particular, 40% of such 'pedal manipulation' accidents were found to be caused by the elderly aged 61 or older.

Japan, which entered a super-aged society before us, has long been a social controversy over pedal manipulation.

In 2019, an 87-year-old driver mistook the accelerator pedal for a brake and stepped on it, killing two people and injuring nine others.

In Japan, 33% of deaths caused by drivers aged 75 or older were caused by incorrect steering of the steering wheel or pedal.

After that, in 2021, Japan began introducing a pedal malfunction prevention system for vehicles.

If there is an obstacle at a certain distance back and forth while at rest, the accelerator pedal is strongly pressed to prevent it from hitting and the warning message is displayed.

While the number of license holders aged 65 and over in Korea is surging 42.4% from 3.33 million in 2019 to 4.74 million last year, there are voices calling for the introduction of a pedal malfunction prevention device.
