China has criticized new Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba for paying tribute to Yasukuni shrine, saying it should be "cautious in its words and actions."

"Yasukuni shrine is a symbol of Japan's militaristic war of aggression, a joint force of 14 Class A war criminals," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said at a regular briefing.

He added, "We urge Japan to completely break with militarism and gain the trust of its Asian neighbors and the international community with its actual actions."

However, this time, it did not provide an explanation that it had complained separately.

China said it made a diplomatic protest in October last year and April this year when then Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida sealed tributes to Yasukuni shrine.
