China announced on the 17th that it is considering raising tariffs on imported high-emission cars.

According to CCTV, a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Commerce said at a regular press conference, "We will consider all factors and then make a careful decision."A

high-emission internal combustion engine is a vehicle with an engine displacement of more than 2,500 cc that is fueled by gasoline and diesel.

"China is internally pushing for a process to raise tariff rates on high-emission imports," the social media account of CCTV parent company Central Broadcasting Bureau said in June. "If we raise it, European brands such as BMW and Mercedes will be the first to be hit."

China's move is interpreted as a response to the European Union and the EU's vote on 27 member states on the 4th to pass a final tariff plan that imposes tariffs of up to 45.3% on Chinese electric vehicles from the end of this month.

The EU plans to continue negotiations with China, so there is a possibility that the imposition of final tariffs will be suspended if the deal is concluded, but experts say that the trade dispute between the EU and China will intensify if the settlement fails.
