Under the current law, the number of employed people working beyond the retirement age of 60 topped all age groups, surpassing those in their 50s.

This is the first time since relevant statistics were compiled, and this trend is likely to continue for some time due to the aging population.

I'll connect with a reporter to hear more about it.

Reporter Park Ki-wan, how much more people over the age of 60 have been employed?

[Reporter]
Yes, the number of employed over 60 last month increased by 272,000 compared to a year ago.

The total number of people is 6,749,000, the highest ever since related statistics began to be compiled.

The proportion of people aged 60 or older among all employed also increased to 23.4%,
Beyond the
50s, people aged 60 and over ranked first in the number of employed people in all age groups.

As of July 1982, when statistics began to be compiled, the proportion of employed people aged 60 or older was about 6%.

At that time, it was a quarter of the employed in their 20s, and the proportion of employed people nearly quadrupled in 42 years.

However, there was also a phenomenon of concentration in some areas by industry where people in their 60s or older were employed.

The National Statistical Office said employment over the age of 60 increased significantly in the health and welfare and manufacturing industries.

In particular, it was interpreted that women in their 60s and older were employed in the care sector such as welfare centers, and men continued to be employed in the form of non-regular workers.

In the midst of this, the start-up of the elderly has also increased significantly.

As of July, the total number of start-ups in Korea increased by 1.5%.

On the other hand, 13,000 founders were over 60 years old, up 14.6% in a year, showing an overwhelming increase.

The proportion of start-ups over the age of 60 also accounted for 14% of the total, recording the highest record in history as of July, and the second highest in history on a monthly basis after March.

The Small and Medium Venture Business Research Institute said that the number of elderly people in the labor market is bound to grow as the population ages, and that it is necessary to approach employment extension rather than retirement age extension as it is also intertwined with youth employment issues.

For this reason, discussions on continuing employment plans, such as extending the retirement age, are expected to begin in earnest in the future.
