People across the country said, "Beep beep". Earthquake disaster text...I'm going to change it to shaking standards.

Everyone has experienced being surprised by the sound of "earthquake disaster text" and "beep~" sent by the Meteorological Agency when an earthquake occurs.

Many pointed out that it doesn't ring too often or on time.

In the future, we will change the shipping standard to actual shaking instead of earthquake scale and subdivide the unit from metropolitan city to city, county, and district.

Reporter Jung Hye-yoon's report.

The lights and kitchenware are shaking.

In 2022, shaking was detected off the coasts of Yeongnam, including Busan and Ulsan, after a strong earthquake of magnitude 6 or more occurred in the southeastern waters of Oita Prefecture, Japan.

[Hwang Seong-moon / Back then Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province viewer tipster: There was a 'da da da da' sound coming from Yuri. I held the bed and felt the vibration as if someone was shaking it hard.]

However, because it was an earthquake abroad and did not meet the criteria for sending disaster texts, local residents had to spend the night anxious without any information.

On the contrary, in November last year, the 4.0-magnitude Gyeongju earthquake was not an earthquake, but an earthquake disaster text that sounded from early dawn.

In fact, the shaking of magnitude 3 or higher was detected in Yeongnam areas such as Busan and Ulsan, but rapid disaster texts rang out across the country, including Seoul and Gyeonggi.

In fact, the possibility of damage is low, and in the metropolitan area, where there was no earthquake, there was confusion between going to work and going to school.

To compensate for these limitations, the Korea Meteorological Administration has decided to improve the criteria for sending seismic disaster text messages from the "scale" basis to the "shaking, progress" basis from the 28th.

[Jeong Hyun-sook / Director of Earthquake Volcano at the Korea Meteorological Administration: Currently, "emergency disaster messages" are being sent regardless of the magnitude of 3.5 or higher in the area and 4.0 or higher in the sea. In the future, if the maximum expected progress is more than 5, it will be transmitted as an emergency disaster text accompanied by a notification sound of 40 dB (decibel) or higher, and if the expected progress is less than 4, it will be transmitted as a "safety information text".

The Korea Meteorological Administration has subdivided the scope of earthquake disaster text transmission from the existing metropolitan cities/provinces to Si/Gun/Gu
It said it sends earthquake text messages despite the shaking of the Korean Peninsula caused by earthquakes abroad such as
Japan.

In particular, emergency disaster texts sent nationwide by the "Earthquake Early Warning" will also be adjusted from 4.0 or higher to 5.0 or higher to reduce excessive anxiety and increase efficiency.
