At least six people were killed when a hurricane hit Cuba, a Caribbean island country suffering from severe power shortages.

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel says heavy rain and strong winds caused by Hurricane Oscar have killed six people so far.

"The damage was concentrated in eastern Guantánamo," President Díaz-Canel said. "The hurricane was not initially expected to be large, but it caused great damage in the process of passing through Cuba."

In the meantime, the unstable power grid, which suffered residents with power outages for up to 16 hours a day, has reportedly been restored to some extent.

"As of the morning of the 22nd, about 70% of the population is receiving power," the Cuban Power Authority said on Facebook.

In Cuba, a thermal power plant failure on the 18th caused a blackout situation in Havana and other countries.

The Cuban government, already struggling with insufficient fuel, is implementing emergency measures such as school closures and suspension of non-essential businesses until the 23rd to minimize energy consumption.
