One person has died and 49 are being hospitalized in 10 states after eating an E. coli-tainted McDonald's hamburger in the United States.

According to the Associated Press and Reuters, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the CDC said that a strain of E. coli, E. coli 'O157:H7,' was detected in McDonald's quarter-founder hamburger.

The CDC explained that many of the victims said they ate McDonald's hamburgers before developing symptoms such as severe abdominal pain and fever, especially quarter-founders hamburgers.

The CDC added that investigators are intensively investigating possible contamination of onions and beef patties, but it has not yet determined which ingredients were contaminated with E. coli.

Most of the victims came from Colorado and Nebraska, the CDC said.

McDonald's said in a statement that it is also actively collecting beef patties and onions for quarter-founders burgers, temporarily excluding quarter-founders hamburgers from its menu at its stores in 10 states where food poisoning has occurred.

It also said it was working on its own investigation to determine the cause, adding that initial investigations suggested that chopped onions used in quarter pounds may have caused food poisoning, which was supplied by a supplier to three distribution centers.
