Kang Kyung-heum, a former lawmaker of Jeju Island who was put on trial for prostitution at an illegal entertainment establishment, was fined.

On the 23rd, the Jeju District Court's Criminal Chamber 3 (Chief Judge Jeon Yong-soo) sentenced former lawmaker Kang, who was indicted without detention on charges of violating the law on punishment of acts such as prostitution, to a fine of 2 million won.

Earlier on January 27 last year, former lawmaker Kang was accused of prostitution by moving to a lodging facility after drinking with a foreign employee at a bar in downtown Jeju. Two days later, on the 29th, it was also confirmed that 800,000 won was transferred to the account, including the payment for prostitution. At the time, he was an incumbent provincial councilor.

Former lawmaker Kang, who was born in 1993, was elected as the youngest provincial councilor in Jeju in the June 1 local elections in 2022.

Then, in February 2023, he was caught drunk driving and received a summary order of 8 million won. In this case, he was referred to the Special Committee on Ethics for the first time in the legislative history of the Jeju Provincial Council and was suspended from attendance and disciplined for an open apology on the 30th.

Not long after the scandal over drunk driving, suspicions of prostitution arose, and the Democratic Party of Korea's Jeju Provincial Party held an ethics trial meeting to expel Kang, who resigned from his post.
