Volkswagen, Europe's largest automaker, is seeking to close at least three factories in Germany and cut overall employee wages by 10%.

Daniela Cavallo, chairman of Volkswagen's labor and management council, unveiled the company's proposal at an employee briefing at the Wolfsburg plant on the 28th local time.

Cavallo said the company's plan is to reduce production at workplaces other than those subject to closure and move some departments abroad or switch to outsourcing.

"All Volkswagen plants in Germany are affected by this plan. No one can feel safe anymore," he said, clarifying his opposition.

There are 10 Volkswagen plants in Germany, including assembly and parts production, with about 120,000 employees, and German media estimate that the reduction in staff following the plant's closure will be up to 30,000.

However, some predict that the union will go on a full strike as it strongly opposes wage cuts, factory closures, and layoffs.
