Former Bolivian President Evo Morales, who claimed to have been shot by a gunman, fired at a police officer just before he was shot, according to a government statement.

Bolivia's Interior Minister Eduardo Del Castillo said at a press conference on the 28th local time, "The day before, at a checkpoint in the Cochabamba region, former President Morales first shot at a police agent conducting a drug trafficking control operation," adding, "No one believes Morales' play."

At the same time, Minister Del Castillo released a video of Morales' voice saying, "I shot the tire."

Earlier, former President Morales posted a four-minute, 26-second video taken on his mobile phone on social media, saying, "I was attacked by four men wearing black hoods while on the move."

"President Arce destroyed Bolivia, and now he is trying to get rid of me," he said, claiming that the incident was related to the current government.

Bolivia's interior minister said, however, that "the alleged assassination based on the edited video is not convincing" and that "we have decided to request an investigation into former President Morales on charges of attempted murder of police officers."
