Cheongju-si says it is essential for the region, but residents strongly oppose it, saying it is being promoted unilaterally without communication.

The road in front of the temporary city hall in Cheongju-si was full of residents.
More than 300 residents gathered against the construction of a recycling screening center scheduled to be built in Hyundo-myeon.
Residents raised their voices to stop the unilateral construction of Cheongju-si.
"I disagree, I disagree."
Residents strongly criticized Cheongju for ignoring procedures such as feasibility studies and environmental impact assessments and pushing for the construction without prior communication.
He also pointed out that there are schools and dormitories as well as villages near recycling facilities, which will inevitably adversely affect the health of residents.
[Ahn Young-ye / Chairman of the Emergency Management Committee: I think it's wrong to have a recycling screening center in residential areas. Without any communication with the residents, Cheongju-si is a (unilateral) administration....]
Cheongju-si understands the residents' opposition, but says there are no procedural problems.
Rather, he stressed that the generation of recycled waste in Cheongju is already saturated, and if it is not executed by next year, the government and others must be returned, so the project needs to be carried out.
It added that the recycling facility being promoted is state-of-the-art with few environmental problems, and that it will also implement all measures to address residents' concerns, including the installation of pollution prevention facilities.
[Kim Hong-seok / Head of Resource Policy Division, Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province: (Recycling) is a demand of the times. Even if it's unfortunate because of the virtuous cycle of resources, the city has no choice but to do it for the entire city of Cheongju..]
Conflicts between Cheongju-si, which says recycling facilities are essential in the region, and residents who demand the abolition are expected to continue for the time being without finding a clear solution.
