Ukraine's military says Russia has launched cruises, ballistic missiles and drones towards Kyiv.
As Russian airstrikes began, air raid alarms sounded in Kyiv and explosions could be heard everywhere, Reuters said.
The specific damage situation is not yet known.
Kyiv, the head of the military administration, claimed that Russia had destroyed cruise and ballistic missiles and up to 12 drones.
It is the first time in 73 days that Russia has attacked Kyiv with missiles since August 26.
Ukraine has been worried that Russia will launch large-scale airstrikes targeting energy infrastructure at a time when winter begins and electricity consumption increases.
