The Overseas Korean Administration announced today (14th) that it will urgently provide generators to Korean language schools in Cuba, which have recently been affected by large-scale blackouts.
The Cuban Hangeul School in Havana, Cuba, is said to be suffering from long-term power outages as well as hurricanes and strong earthquakes.
Cuban Hangeul School is reportedly complaining that compatriots are having difficulty preserving food in the refrigerator due to the blackout and using rainwater as household water.
Accordingly, the Korean language school has requested the Korean Language School and the Korean Cultural Center, which are used as emergency evacuation facilities for Korean communities, to support the generator.
In March, the Overseas Koreans' Office enacted Guidelines on Supporting Overseas Koreans in Overseas Danger to quickly support the Korean communities affected by overseas crises, and this is the first case of Cuban support.
The guidelines stipulate that overseas Korean organizations in the countries where the disaster occurred can request support for goods necessary to overcome the damage.
Lee Sang-deok, head of the Overseas Koreans Agency, said, "It is meaningful to support the Cuban compatriot community with historical characteristics after enacting the guidelines for supporting compatriots in danger," adding, "We will continue to seek ways to provide practical help to the compatriot community suffering from various disasters."
