Park Nam-seo, mayor of Yeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, who was handed over to trial for illegally campaigning in the party's primary process, was also sentenced to invalidity of the election by the appeals court.
The Daegu High Court rejected both appeals in an appeal against Mayor Park, who is accused of violating the Public Official Election Act, and maintained the original trial, which sentenced him to one and a half years in prison and three years of probation.
The court explained that severe punishment is inevitable as Mayor Park committed another crime even though he was already fined for election crimes in 2003 and 2015.
Mayor Park was indicted on charges of mobilizing local young people in illegal campaigns and handing money and valuables to residents through election campaigns in the party's primary process ahead of the 2022 local elections.
