SEVENTEEN member Seungkwan was appointed as an ambassador to promote his hometown Jeju.
Seungkwan attended the ceremony for appointing a public relations ambassador at the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Communication Cooperation Center in Ildo-dong, Jeju City, this afternoon (19th). In particular, this position is more meaningful because Seungkwan, a native of Jeju, was recognized for his contribution to global promotion in the region.
At the appointment ceremony, Seungkwan said, "I have felt proud as a Jeju citizen since I was a child. So, when I had the opportunity to speak at the UNESCO Youth Forum last year, I wanted to introduce Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, a world natural cultural heritage. I feel new and grateful to be appointed as an ambassador for Jeju," he said.
"We have been working with the desire to give Jeju residents better energy and hope," he said, adding, "We will continue to work harder to promote Jeju and SEVENTEEN to the world, so please watch us."
Jeju Governor Oh Young-hoon said, "I am happy that Jeju's world-class artist will serve as a promotional ambassador for my hometown," adding, "I look forward to serving as a cultural diplomat to convey Jeju's clean nature, culture and art, and value as an island of world peace to the world."
After the appointment ceremony for the ambassador, Seungkwan participated in the Jeju Hometown Love Donation and helped protect Jeju Southern bottlenose dolphins. He said, "I've been thinking about how I can contribute to Jeju for a long time, and I'm happy to convey my love for my hometown through this event."
In November last year, Seventeen made headlines by releasing a special performance video of the "God of Music" filmed in Jeju at the 13th UNESCO Youth Forum. In his speech at the time, Seungkwan also mentioned that Jeju was the first region in the world to be designated by UNESCO in three natural environment sectors at the same time.
Seungkwan's agency, Pledis Entertainment, held a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Jeju Provincial Government in September to promote K-pop Jeju content and promised mutual cooperation. The two sides plan to establish a cooperative system to boost the Jeju culture and tourism industry and K-pop Jeju content production, and to increase the brand value of Jeju Island and Pledis.
