The Democratic Party of Korea has proposed an amendment to the election law that includes easing punishment for violations of the Public Official Election Act, which is controversial.

It was proposed ahead of the first trial of Lee Jae-myung, but Han Dong-hoon, the representative of the People's Power, said, "We have no choice but to see it as an Abu-seong bill to save Lee."

Fourteen members of the Democratic Party, including Rep. Park Hee-seung, proposed a revision to the election law on the 14th, a day before the first trial of Lee Jae-myung's violation of the Public Official Election Act.

The main point of the amendment is to delete the crime of publicizing false information and the crime of defamation of candidates.

The reason for the amendment was that there are many cases of political and social abuse, and that false disclosures can be punished by other laws.

On the day of the first trial, an amendment to the election law was also proposed to increase the current standard of 1 million won to 10 million won, saying that it would reduce the burden on judges for invalid election sentences.

All of these are provisions related to the alleged violation of the election law applied to Lee, and the Democratic Party drew the line that it only coincided with the time of Lee's first trial.

[Cho Seung-rae / Minjoo Party's chief spokesman (SBS Kim Tae-hyun's political show): There's been a lot of talk that the standard of 1 million won is too much.]

On the other hand, the people's power penetrated the intention of the law's revision, saying that it would save representative Lee even by destroying the judicial system.

If the amendment is passed, CEO Lee's suspended prison sentence in the first trial will disappear as a "exemption" ruling.

[Han Dong-hoon / Representative of People's Power: The Democratic Party of Korea intends to change the result of the ruling to the power of the National Assembly....]

There were also criticisms that it is a "great man's law" that changes the law because of one person, and that it is a bill that even other politicians are criminals.

The revision of the election law from the opposition party is expected to demand a presidential reconsideration, and it will be difficult to overcome the wall of re-voting.

However, some point out that the unnecessary battle between the ruling and opposition parties heated up as it coincided with the violation of the Lee Jae-myung election law.
