Samsung Electronics has received a verdict from a U.S. federal court in Texas seeking $118 million (W166 billion) in a patent infringement lawsuit with U.S. chipmaker Netlist.
The jury believes Samsung's infringement is deliberate, and there is a possibility that the compensation will increase by up to three times.
Netlist claimed that Samsung Electronics infringed on its patents in memory modules for cloud servers, and Samsung countered that the patents were invalid.
In response, Samsung Electronics is separately filing an additional lawsuit, claiming that Netlist did not provide a fair license.
Netlist has won similar lawsuits in the past, leading to hundreds of millions of dollars in compensation rulings each from Samsung and Micron.
However, seven of the eight patents claimed by Netlist have already been found invalid, and the remaining one is also pending the results of the trial, so Samsung Electronics is shifting to an advantageous position.
Samsung Electronics plans to review the verdict and respond actively.
