The prosecution immediately protested the acquittal of Lee Jae-myung, who was accused of asking his criminal trial witnesses to give false testimony.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office issued a statement and said it is hard to understand that the first trial found Kim Jin-sung guilty of perjury at the request of Lee, but acquitted Lee in light of the legal principles and evidence.
He then added that he would do his best to prove CEO Lee's guilt at the appeal trial after carefully reviewing the ruling of the first trial.
Lee was indicted on charges of perjury in February 2019 for demanding false testimony from Kim, a former secretary of Seongnam Mayor Kim Byung-ryang, in a trial on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act.
The first trial court today (25th) recognized some of Kim's testimony as perjury and sentenced him to a fine of 5 million won, but acquitted Lee, saying he did not intend to teach Kim perjury.
