This year's seaweed exports have already exceeded last year's exports, which were the largest ever.

As of October, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries exported $850 million in seaweed and about 1.2 trillion won in Korean money, exceeding $790 million in exports last year.

In addition, the number of export destinations increased from only 64 in 2010 to 122, with Korean seaweed accounting for more than 70% of the global market.

Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Kang Kyung-hyung said, "We will continue to work on production support to stabilize domestic demand while increasing the value-added K-dried seaweed in the global market and strengthening export competitiveness."

Earlier, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced measures to strengthen the competitiveness of the seaweed industry, including international standardization of the English name of seaweed to 'GIM'.
