The international community welcomed a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon's pro-Iranian militant group Hezbollah.

There have also been calls for the conclusion of the ceasefire to lead to a ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

"UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomes the announcement of the ceasefire and hopes the agreement will end the suffering, destruction and violence suffered by the people of both countries," the UN said in a statement, according to Reuters and other foreign media.

"Secretary-General Guterres urges each to fully respect all agreements and implement them quickly," he added.

"This is very encouraging news," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote in an X post, welcoming Lebanon as "hezbollah's influence diminishes and Lebanon will have an opportunity to develop internal stability and security."

Yeiner Henis-Plashardt, the U.N. special coordinator in Lebanon, also issued a welcome statement, saying "nothing is needed more than the unwavering and complete commitment of both sides" and that a significant amount of work lies ahead for the implementation of the agreement.

U.S. President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron, who have mediated the cease-fire, issued a joint statement welcoming the cease-fire agreement, stressing that they will "work with Israel and Lebanon to fully implement the agreement and prevent another cycle of violence."

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer also issued a statement saying it would be a "satisfactory measure for Lebanese and northern Israeli civilians who have suffered at unimaginable costs" and that the agreement should be a lasting political solution in Lebanon.

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati also thanked the U.S.-France ceasefire and said the agreement was a key step in Lebanon's stability and would also help stabilize the region.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also issued a statement welcoming the cease-fire agreement as a "light of hope" and a "victory in diplomacy" for everywhere "the people on both sides of the border hope to live in true and lasting stability."
