With heavy snow warnings in Seoul and other metropolitan areas, more than 25cm of heavy snow is expected to fall overnight.

In particular, the temperature is expected to drop further, so the snow is likely to freeze as it is.

This time, we will look at the current status and prospects of snow with a reporter.

Jeong Hye-yoon, a weather disaster reporter, is here. Hello

It snowed a lot today.

It was the first heavy snow in November in 117 years?

[Reporter]
Yes, it is.

As of November, it was the first snow in 117 years in Seoul.

Gwanak-gu has received the most snow so far, which is close to 30 centimeters in Seoul.

The official record of Songwol-dong is also 18cm, the highest since the observation, and it is the first time that Seoul has received so much snow in November since the weather observation in 1907.

It is the first time in 14 years that a heavy snow warning has been issued in Seoul since 2010.

On January 4, 2010, 25 centimeters of snow fell, and this is the first time such a big snow has fallen since then.

The amount of snow that fell last night is also predicted overnight, so special attention is needed.

In particular, yesterday and today's situation is so unusual that it is called the best of all time.

The weather around Korea provided by the Korea Meteorological Administration is also a view.

To the north of the Korean Peninsula, low pressure, or very fast winds in the upper atmosphere, is formed by the separation of some of the jet stream, which is very cold because it contains the cold air of the Arctic.

This joint low pressure is located to the north, and this low pressure is blocked by the east air current, and it's circulating counterclockwise.

Among them, the cold air that descends south along the low pressure sinks to the ground near the west coast of Gyeonggi-do, periodically creating a trough of pressure, and snow clouds continue to develop.

In particular, as the wind strengthens to the west wind line, a lot of snow is falling inland and it is expected to continue overnight, so caution is needed.

Then how much more snow does it fall overnight?

[Reporter]
Yes, the Korea Meteorological Administration has predicted up to 25cm of snow in the Seoul metropolitan area from tonight to tomorrow

There is a possibility of another snowfall in Seoul as predicted last night, with a maximum of 10cm or more.

In particular, there is a possibility that the snow will freeze as it is expected to drop further to temperatures this time.

There is a possibility that road thin ice may be made in some areas, and caution is needed because there is a high possibility that the snow will remain frozen at the entrance and exit of the tunnel and on the side roads.

But the snow problem this time is a wet snow.

There have already been casualties due to the wet snow.

Why is the snow so humid this time?

[Reporter]
Yes, as I mentioned earlier, the sea temperature around the Korean Peninsula is currently very high.

On top of that, there's a very cold air from the north, accompanied by the Arctic chill, and when these two air with such a large temperature difference meet, they create a stronger snow cloud, and they're filled with more moisture.

I think it would be easy to understand if you look at the case where steam steams on hot water in bathhouses and saunas.

Usually, snow clouds are created as they pass over the sea, called the lake effect.

When cold air comes down to the northwest, snow clouds are usually formed near the west coast of Chungnam and the west coast of Honam.

When the cold air flows south to the northeast, snow clouds are created in Yeongdong.

This is why it snows a lot in two areas: the west coast and the east coast in winter.

In particular, such humid snow weighs more than three times as much as construction.

Usually, the weight of wet snow in an area of 1m in width is about 300kg, which is more than twice the weight of construction.

In particular, if you look at the next screen,
If 50cm of snow accumulates in a 10m wide and 10m long vinyl house, the weight of the snow will reach 30 tons.

Two 15-ton trucks and a telephone pole are the same as 30 weeks up.

Even if more than 20cm of snow fell like this, it is about half of it, and this is enough weight to cause damage, so thorough preparation is required.

[Anchor]
But I think it will be dangerous if humid snow flows inland like this.

[Reporter]
Yes, it is. The west and east coasts are usually snowy areas in winter, so they are always well prepared, but inland areas such as Seoul are not.

That's why it's more dangerous.

This is especially true when there is a lot of wet snow inland like this.

It is a rather unusual case when the cold air is further strengthened by the west wind rather than the northwest wind, but snow clouds have flowed inland as a result of the barometric valley.

Usually, continental high pressure affects three to four days and then turns into a mobile high pressure, turning into a west wind, and snow on the west coast often flows inland.

This year, due to the warming trend, there is a view that the possibility of snow clouds strengthening from the sea could increase due to early deterioration of continental high pressure, which could lead to inland inflow.

The video of the report on the 26th, such as strong winds and hail, but yesterday was very windy and there were places where hail fell, how about now?

[Reporter]
Yes, there were many places where hail was observed with strong winds between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. yesterday.

Typhoon-like strong winds of around 30 meters per second accompanied Ilsan Goyang City and parts of Gangwon Province, and as hail fell, a report screen appeared on YTN. It's very unusual for this to happen in November.

With mild air in the south, the temperature difference became very large as the cold air went south, and the atmospheric instability intensified, which resulted in hail as the wind became stronger.

Now, although not as much as yesterday, the wind is still strong at sea and inland. There are high waves at the sea that are at the level of a special wind advisory, and the wind is blowing more than 15m per second to Chungcheong and southern Jeju Island, so caution is needed. A special report is also being issued.

I'm worried about the cold in the middle of the snow. The freezing cold is getting worse?

[Reporter]
Yes, it is.

The temperature in Seoul this morning was -1.3 degrees.

Tomorrow, we will go down to -2 degrees.

After that, the cold will peak at -4 degrees on Friday.

On weekends and holidays, the cold below zero is expected to continue around -2 degrees Celsius.

In the period of December next week, the cold below zero is expected to continue after the snow rain in the early part of the week, so the cold weather is expected to continue for a total of 10 days compared to previous years.

But wasn't it predicted to be cozy this winter? It's cold and snowy from the beginning, and the weather is not easy, right?

[Reporter]
That's how it was forecasted in the overall long-term outlook.

However, there was a prospect that the temperature could drop to the northern cold around the beginning and the third week as the cold weather periodically moves south in December.
The Korea Meteorological Administration is also thinking about the range of temperature fluctuations due to

If you look at it as a whole, like last fall, it is mild, but I think it can feel even more cold if the chill comes down a little.

In addition, if the cold comes down in such a mild state, snow clouds may develop stronger, increase in volume, or unusual hail or strong winds may develop due to atmospheric instability, resulting in more musical instrument images.

In particular, according to a recent study by a domestic researcher, this winter is a time when warming and La Niña overlap, which usually brings early cold in La Niña and warming brings an increase in temperature at the Earth's sea level, and the two effects overlap, which are expected to lead to large temperature fluctuations.

However, if the repetition period is short in autumn, it is expected that it will be repeated for more than a week in winter.

When the cold comes, mild weather for more than a week can be like this for more than a week.

In fact, this week is cold all week, and it seems that the cold weather will continue for nearly 10 days until next week.
It is predicted that it will improve after
and that there is a possibility of another downward trend in the second half of December.
