Yongin City said Mayor Lee Sang-il sent a letter to Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn Deok-geun expressing his opposition to the development of a mine in Jukjeon-dong, Suji-gu, which is being pursued by a private company.

In the letter, Mayor Lee conveyed this position, saying citizens' prevailing public opinion is that the damage to the public interest, such as the deterioration of the residential environment of citizens and the infringement of students' right to learn, is much greater than the private interest caused by mineral development according to the operator's plan to create a quarry on the steep slope of the mountain 26-3 in Jukjeon-dong.

Mayor Lee said, "The planned mining site is a forest and steep slope that needs to be preserved, and the slope is expected to exceed the standards for development activities, and the infringement of the public interest is expected to be remarkable in terms of social concepts." "The mining coordination committee under the Ministry of Industry, which will deliberate on the issue this month, should consider the will of Yongin citizens and the mayor."

In addition, he emphasized that the planned site of the mine development is a forest that needs to be preserved, and that the area around the nearby Daejisan Mountain is the birthplace of the citizens' "Great Mountain Revival Movement" against reckless development in the late 1990s.

He added that the late Cardinal Kim Soo-hwan, who was the first Korean to be appointed as a Catholic cardinal, and many clergy are buried in the Catholic Park Cemetery, Dankook University and various educational facilities, as well as large residential areas with more than 200,000 people. The city of

gave a "unanimous" opinion at the time of public interest discussions with the Ministry of Industry to establish the mining rights of Company A here in June 2021, and the opposition to the development is still clear.

Company A objected to Yongin City's opposition and Gyeonggi-do, the licensee of the mining plan, and filed an objection to the mining coordination committee of the Ministry of Industry.

The committee will deliberate on the agenda this month.
