U.S. Representative Mike Waltz, who was nominated as Trump's second national security adviser, called the war in Ukraine "a life-changing World War I-style war."
"President Trump is very concerned about the continued carnage," Waltz said in a video interview with CBS. "We have to stop fighting."
When asked if Trump was sending a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin about the ceasefire, he said, "We will continue to talk, and Trump has made it clear that he wants to stop the war."
Waltz said Trump criticized the Biden administration's support for Ukraine, saying it was a "blank check," not a strategy to end the war.
As to whether to retain U.S. troops in Syria, he explained that ISIS should not explode again and create an Islamic theocracy that threatens the U.S., Iraq, Jordan, Turkey and Europe with terrorism.
