Asked if he was concerned about inflation if he imposed tariffs as he promised in the presidential election, Trump stressed that tariffs would enrich the U.S.
[Donald Trump / U.S. President-elect] Tariffs will make America richer if they are used well. We have all the cards in our hands.
U.S. consumers are stocking up on the prediction that the tariff bomb will become a reality.
In a credit card dot-com survey, one-third of respondents said they bought more because they were concerned about rising prices due to the imposition of tariffs.
According to a University of Michigan consumer survey, 25% of respondents expected inflation next year, above 10% a month ago, and a record high.
[Jin / U.S. Shoppers: (What do you want to buy before inflation?) I want to buy furniture, appliances, and household items at a lower price before prices go up.]
[Jacob / U.S. Shopper: New York is good for shopping, so I want to buy clothes in advance. Prefer a more open economy with less protectionism.
As the U.S. is the world's largest importer of $3.8 trillion last year, the economic impact of the tariff is expected to be significant.
Experts warn that hoarding to prepare for price increases could lead to supply shortages and trigger price increases even before the tariff bomb explodes.
