An underground facility to study high-level radioactive waste disposal technology will be built in Taebaek City, Gangwon-do.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said that Taebaek City has been confirmed as a planned site for construction at a meeting of the evaluation committee for selecting the site for "research underground research facilities" in Seoul today.
This facility is a research facility that develops technology for the construction and operation of a waste dump about 500m underground, and no high-level waste or spent nuclear fuel is brought in.
The government plans to spend 513.8 billion won to start construction in 2026 and complete it by 2032.
Lee Sang-ho, Mayor of Taebaek, said, "This project is expected to revitalize the local economy and become a high-tech research city."
