The National Cancer Center's radiation exposure was also caused by poor supervision...a lack of safety awareness

In October, it was confirmed that a maintenance worker staying in the National Cancer Center's linear accelerator room was exposed to radiation due to poor management and supervision of maintenance work procedures and lack of safety awareness.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission investigated the radiation exposure incident at the National Cancer Center and found that the exposed person turned off the CCTV monitor and entered the accelerator room for rest, and the maintenance worker operated the accelerator without further confirmation even though the CCTV was turned off, resulting in a lack of radiation safety awareness.

In addition, it was confirmed that even after radiation exposure, the process of confirming the situation, measures, and reporting was not properly carried out, and the maintenance process was not carried out according to the quality control procedure of the National Cancer Center, so management and supervision were poor.

Accordingly, the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission will dispose of 3 million won in fines to the National Cancer Center for lack of maintenance and supervision and failure to prepare a corrective action report, and 4 million won in fines to those who do not wear a personal exposure dose meter when entering the radiation management area.

The Nuclear Safety and Security Commission added that it will prevent the recurrence of radiation exposure accidents through efforts such as specifying management, supervision, and reporting procedures and strengthening education for radiation workers.
