Cheonsei Fraud Couple Sent Back From U.S. With KRW 6.2 Billion in Deposit

A couple who tricked 90 tenants into fleeing to the U.S. with billions of deposits were caught locally and repatriated to the country.

The couple in their 40s are accused of stealing 6.2 billion won by committing a so-called "can lease" fraud, which has more loans and deposits than the actual value of the building, after buying 11 multi-family houses in Daejeon for four years from April 2019.

They were found to have fled to the U.S. in September last year to avoid a police investigation, and the National Police Agency has worked with the U.S. Homeland Security Investigations since August last year to arrest the couple after hiding for two months.
