ChatGPT developer OpenAI's development of next-generation flagship artificial intelligence models is lagging far behind its original goal, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The newspaper quoted several sources as saying that the next-generation AI model, GPT-5, was expected to be released around the middle of this year, but that the development schedule was being delayed without promise at a heavy cost.

OpenAI has reportedly conducted at least two large-scale training sessions in the span of more than 18 months of development processing vast amounts of data, but each time it has encountered new problems and failed to achieve the expected results.

The Wall Street Journal said the new model performed better than the GPT-4, but was not advanced enough to justify the huge cost of development.

Previous models were able to train with news articles, SNS posts, and scientific papers collected from the Internet, but they reportedly suffer from insufficient data needed for more intelligent training for new models.

In the meantime, the newspaper reported that the constant attempt to remove outstanding researchers by offering high salaries from competitors also increases the burden of OpenAI.
