background
National Assembly Speaker Woo Won-sik volunteered for an unscheduled press conference.

The National Assembly impeached the president in accordance with the people's will on the 14th, and expected the process to proceed smoothly in accordance with the Constitution and laws, but it is not causing public anxiety and confusion.

Chairman Woo expressed regret, saying that the core of internal and external instability and confusion is "state instability," because the grand principle of operating in accordance with the Constitution and laws is faltering.

"It is wrong for Acting President Han Deok-soo to make the appointment of a special prosecutor and a judge of the Constitutional Court the subject of discussion and negotiation between the ruling and opposition parties," he said. "It's already been discussed between the ruling and opposition parties, but I can't understand that the government wants to go back to the previous stage in its turn to do its job."

In particular, regarding the special prosecutor, he said, "We passed it to secure publicity through legislative measures, and the purpose is to find out the truth and hold them accountable through independent investigations from power, but we should not delay our judgment to discuss it again," adding, "It is not appropriate to distort the public's demands into a conflict of opinion between the ruling and opposition parties."

He also raised his voice, saying that the appointment of constitutional judges is not subject to political negotiations, and the composition of a nine-member system is strongly demanded by the Constitutional Court to the National Assembly, and that it is necessary to award a letter of appointment to a judge selected by the National Assembly for the normal operation of the constitutional institution.

In addition, "It is to prevent confusion among the people that Acting President Han Deok-soo faithfully fulfills his responsibilities," he said. "People's uncertainty is reduced only when public officials comply with the Constitution and laws and fulfill their responsibilities." Han finished the interview by saying, "Do your duty and responsibility in accordance with your duty, and keep in mind that this is what you said to be the last duty of your long public service."

Regarding the "impeachment of Prime Minister Han Deok-soo," which the Democratic Party has insisted on, Chairman Woo said, "It's very worrisome, and we pushed for a press conference to prevent that from happening."
