U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's statement that he wants to buy Greenland, a Danish autonomous territory located in the Arctic Ocean, reflects his instinct from a real estate agent, the New York Times reported.

The New York Times analyzed on the 23rd local time that Trump is seeking to purchase Greenland in terms of national security and commercial interests.

Trump is not the first U.S. president to show interest in buying Greenland, located on the North American continent.

In 1946, shortly after World War II, former President Harry Truman also offered to buy Greenland, but it did not happen because of Denmark's rejection, the New York Times said.

Since then, Trump has consistently expressed his desire to buy Greenland since 2019, his first term in office.

In particular, it has reportedly established a detailed negotiation plan to hand over Puerto Rico in the northeastern Caribbean in exchange for buying Greenland.

He also analyzed that Trump's interest in Greenland has a lot of instincts as a former real estate developer who values commercial interests.

More than 43 of the 50 rare earths essential for the manufacture of electric vehicles and wind turbines are reportedly buried in Greenland.

Experts say that if the U.S. incorporates Greenland, it could be a decisive opportunity to break away from its dependence on Chinese rare earths.

He also said that Trump's U.S. priority has an expansionist nature that shows active interest in other countries' territories based on the world's largest military power.

Greenland, which is more than nine times larger than the Korean Peninsula, has been granted the right to declare independence since 2009, but remains Danish territory.
