Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance Choi Sang-mok said he would triple the current level by securing 2,000 additional welfare homes for the elderly next year.

Deputy Prime Minister Choi made the remarks today during a visit to a single elderly household in Guro-gu, Seoul, ahead of Christmas.

Deputy Prime Minister Choi also stressed that he will do his best to improve the quality of life and secure safety for the elderly by securing 30,000 more emergency calls for the elderly alone, increasing them to 300,000 and thoroughly preparing 1.1 million jobs for the elderly, the largest ever.

Deputy Prime Minister Choi also said that he will also visit Gungdong General Social Welfare Center to implement projects to support vulnerable people as quickly and effectively as possible.

It also said the government will continue to make efforts to respond to the expected demand for welfare expansion and system improvement in time as the elderly population grows.

The government plans to implement policies such as an additional 1.6 trillion won in basic pensions in the welfare of the elderly next year, an increase of 60,000 won in heating and cooling costs for senior citizens, a new voucher for 8,000 people for lifelong education for the elderly, and more than double the senior-friendly national sports center.
