Russia has warned U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's second administration, which will be launched next month, that it will respond if it resumes nuclear tests.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov responded in a local media interview when asked about concerns that Russia and other countries could also begin a series of nuclear tests if the U.S. resumes them.
Ryabkov said Trump took a radical attitude toward the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, the CTBT, during the first administration, and pointed out that the U.S. nuclear doctrine in 2018 stated that it refused to ratify the CTBT, which bans all nuclear tests.
"The international situation in this regard is very complex and today's U.S. policy is extremely hostile to Russia in many ways," he said, stressing that there are no exceptions to his actions and actions to ensure security.
Earlier in July, former White House national security adviser Robert O'Brien, Trump's chief of staff, argued that if the Trump administration is re-launched, it should resume nuclear tests so that the U.S. nuclear capabilities can overwhelm China and Russia.
In 2020, the Washington Post also reported that the first Trump administration discussed the resumption of nuclear tests, which had been suspended since 1992.
Russia last conducted a nuclear test in 1990, during the former Soviet Union, and the United States has not conducted a nuclear test since 1992.
