Tottenham have triggered a one-year contract extension option for Son Heung-min.

Tottenham officially announced on the club's official channel that they will be with Son Heung-min until next summer.

Son Heung-min could have become a free agent as his contract with Tottenham was not renewed even though his contract with Tottenham expired on June 30 this year.

Most recently, it was reported again that FC Barcelona, a prestigious Spanish soccer club, showed interest.

However, with the option of a one-year extension, he was eventually confirmed to accompany Tottenham.

In response, Son Heung-min said on X (formerly Twitter), "It's definitely a great thing," and expressed his feelings about extending his contract.

"I've been with Tottenham for almost 10 years, and I've got another year. "I'm very proud of it," he said. "I love Tottenham."

Some interpreted that Tottenham's invocation of a one-year extension option was intended to earn Son Heung-min's transfer fee.

"Tottenham's invocation of a one-year extension option is a measure to prevent Son Heung-min from leaving the team as an FA after the end of the season or transferring in the summer by signing a pre-contract with an overseas club," the British daily Guardian said. "The nightmare scenario for Chairman Daniel Levy is to let Son go without a transfer fee."
