In the new year, illegal fishing by Chinese fishing boats is on the rise in Jeju Island.
On the 3rd, an illegal fishing Chinese fishing boat was caught by the Coast Guard in the sea 120km southwest of Marado Island, Jeju.
The fishing boat was arrested by the Coast Guard in an hour and a half after running away with the ship identification device and AIS turned off to avoid the crackdown.
On the 6th, Chinese fishing boats that were illegally fishing in 120km southwest of Marado Island and 140km southwest of Chagui Island were caught by the Coast Guard one after another.
The two fishing boats were operating with a pan-net that was prohibited from being used in Korea because of its tightness so that the nets could even catch fish.
The Coast Guard conducted a special crackdown from the 2nd to the 4th, seizing one illegal Chinese fishing boat, blocking 50 vessels, and cutting two illegally installed pan-net fishing gear to release about 5 tons of fish.
Last year, 12 Chinese fishing boats were captured by the Coast Guard while illegally fishing in Jeju Island.
